Empty Nest Self Care: Reiki with Kyla Schmidt

Empty nest self care. It should be a THING.

I keep opening doors on new ways to address my changing midlife emotions, working to heal past wounds and feeling at peace as I transition into the fall of my life. It feels funny to acknowledge that.

The Fall Season of Life.

And a vibrant fall it is! I plan on making this season in life last as long as possible!

One of the modalities I have uses throughout ALL STAGES OF LIFE is Reiki.

In this episode, Kyla Schmidt explains what Reiki is, and how essential oils can enhance that energetic experience through the power of plants!

Towards the end of this episode, I share my experience with Kyla, and not all of my Reiki sessions have ended up this way. This one was profound. It’s interesting that when I do seek help, in the form of energy, similar messages present themselves to me.

Let’s meet Kyla Schmidt!

Kyla is a Lyme survivor, and Nutritionist, who struggled with chronic pain. She attributes her biggest shift in her body to a MINDSET shift, that changed how she identifies herself.

“This Mindset Piece was the biggest shift. I was doing all the things. Adding in the last layer, the meditation the mindfulness, the essential oils. I no longer have the daily chronic pain. Yes I get anxious, yes I get poop attacks, yes I get pain, but I no longer identify myself with that.”


She strives to help women with anxiety, who feel lost in their sense of purpose, or broken and not “normal”, regain their sense of calm and wellbeing and help guide them to realize that their mental health does not have to be their identity.

In 2005, after she moved across the country to further her career as a television writer & producer, Kyla developed severe IBS and anxiety.  After struggling with conventional approaches, she adopted a holistic lifestyle to manage her symptoms. What started out as a quest for a simple fix, turned into a passion for wholesome living and an interest in helping others achieve optimal health. 

In 2011, she studied nutrition at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition and later became a colon hydrotherapist to focus on all aspects of digestion. 

Even though she had made so many health and lifestyle changes Kyla began to have flu-like symptoms, body aches and pains and a variety of unexplainable symptoms starting in 2010. At times, it was manageable. But at times her anxiety got so bad she couldn’t leave the house. She couldn’t sleep, and she was always in pain.

However, with therapy, supplements and healthy eating she went back and forth managing her symptoms for several years while continuing to work as a nutritionist and in administrative roles in various clinic settings. In 2019, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroid disease and chronic Lyme disease, and she discovered that these health conditions, while not the cause of her anxiety, can exacerbate mental health issues greatly

With the addition of energy work through reiki, meditation, and mindfulness, along with essential oils, Kyla’s health improved to a place that no longer includes debilitating anxiety and pain.

Kyla realized that focusing on the emotional aspect of her life was the biggest piece of the puzzle in reaching better health. Kyla now focuses on helping people to free themselves of past or present unintegrated trauma’s and drama’s, that can cause anxiety, distress, feelings of hopelessness and lack of purpose so that they can step into the life they always wanted.
