Want the Magical Power of Inner Wisdom to Transform Your Relationship to Food?

Open book with letters pouring out showing knowledge and wisdom to reflect mindful eating

Inner wisdom simply means having an understanding of your own Innate intelligence.

When we talk about a mindful eating practice, we refer to the term Inner Wisdom.

You are the expert in YOU. Perhaps you just don’t know it yet?

What is Inner Wisdom?

This refers to all that what you know about yourself.

You know a lot!

Everyone of us walks a different path, learns along the way, and brings unique gifts to every experience.

Inner wisdom can also refer to your own body cues. Your body is smart. It knows when it is tired, hungry or full. It knows when there is danger, and safety. It knows when it feels satisfied, and when it needs more.

You, and your body are wise.

This is in contrast to Outer Wisdom, which can be a collection of outside forces, that are telling you what you SHOULD do. This advice may seem sensible, but still feel a bit “off.”

Understanding the concept of Mindful Eating starts with Inner and Outer wisdom, and learning the difference.

Discovering your own Inner wisdom is how you become AWARE of all the things about yourself, physical, emotional, spiritual.

Outer wisdom is information.

Podcast Partner Episode: Trusting Yourself Around Food.

Understanding YOURSELF & your body is important in ANY action you take towards your health and wellness.

The two concepts of Inner Wisdom, and Outer Wisdom work together.

When we blend the two we create personal Menopause Health
beyond diets and food measuring.

We create CARE for ourselves too:)

Inner Wisdom is:

  • what you know about yourself and your experience as an eater.

  • your likes and dislikes

  • your thoughts, patterns, food memories, and cravings.

  • your own body cues like hunger, fullness, taste satisfaction and satiety.

Outer Wisdom is:

  • INFORMATION. Books, people, (even me!) who give you information health and food.

  • the clock. Does a certain time signify meal time for you? Even though you aren’t hungry?

  • meal plans. Telling you what to eat and how much.

  • your friends. We love them, they are a great support, and some of them talk about diets and nutrition and weight a lot!

When I was presented this concept of Inner vs Outer wisdom in my first Mindful Eating Training class, I thought,

“What the heck are they talking about??”

AND

Who has time to think about all this?”

My initial reactions in that first class came from a place of confusion. How was this going to help me with my health AND my concerns about my body size?

I had a lot to learn.

It was strange at first, but then … it was OH SO FREEING.

Why do you need to understand Inner Wisdom?

By understanding your inner wisdom, you can make choices about your food, and health that fit YOU.

You can also drop the story about your body and why you need to diet all the time. Diets do not work.

When you understand YOUR inner wisdom, you can see all that information out there, (outer wisdom) with a whole new set of glasses.

You can take in health information, and see if it fits YOU, because you are growing this AWARENESS about yourself.

Inner wisdom makes YOU the expert.

Remember:

  • The one who knows when you are hungry is YOU.

  • The one who knows when you are full is YOU.

  • The one who knows when you are satisfied is YOU.

Here are 4 words to keep in mind when discovering your own INNATE wisdom!

Sift, Question, Integrate, Assess.

Sift. Choose the things that will support you where you are NOW. (Knowing where you want to go is helpful, but understanding where you are at is key).

Question. Does this apply to me? Do I want to know more? Can I be objective about this information? Will it create bad feelings about my body and myself?

Integrate. Try it out. If you want to try a lentil loaf or mindful walking, try it out and see how it fits in your life.

Assess. What went well with this action or practice? What felt funny? Why? Did it help? Why or why not?

Menopause is a time of change and acceptance.

Acceptance of yourself comes with tuning in to that inner wisdom.I believe Menopause is THE best time to tune in to your changing body. Awareness and Acceptance are the foundations to change.

Mindful Eating can help you uncover this.
It is a practice of experiencing your food, IN THE MOMENT, without judging your food, or yourself.

It is an experience of curiosity.

There is no “right way.” to get started. But there are a few basics.

You can learn these in my Mindless to Mindful Course,

As we age, we have been collecting inner wisdom, haven’t we?

Inner wisdom serves us SO much better than diets, for nutrition in menopause
