Midlife Transitions, The Holidays

Menopause

Menopause is one transition after another.

In 2020, we certainly are seeing transitions. Midlife holidays have taken on new meaning. I am not just talking about hot flashes while hanging around a hot oven. I’m talking about the dodgy tradition of Thanksgiving. 2020 has brought racism and marginalization to light, in a way that has me reflecting on the inner messages I have absorbed, and taught, my family.

In menopause, we start to look at the deeper meaning of things in life and I am talking about the marginalization of others. Marginalization is something we learn as a TERM as health professionals. We need to learn the term on a more personal level.

Much of our true global history has been ignored when we are speaking about marginalization. The word was not taught in public school when I attended in the 70’s. Maybe after 2020, it will be a mandatory lesson.

I recorded this on a Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend, as I realize that I might be losing some of my matriarchal duties as I age. You see, I did not have to cook and host the dinner this weekend, that I still uphold and will do, as it is a traditions that brings us together.

That shift brought about feelings of age, loss, and regret.

It also brought a little bit of envy.

I also realized that I have a duty to encourage discussion of the history of Thanksgiving, and other Canadian historical half truths with my family.

Things I mention in this episode:

  • This website, Unwritten Histories, is a fascinating read about some of what we perceive as truth in history. I linked up a specific article here, about Canadian Thanksgiving.

    https://www.unwrittenhistories.com/why-do-we-celebrate-thanksgiving-in-canada/

  • Feelings of control, and loss of it, as we age.

  • Shifts in all traditions. Passing a torch.

  • Jealousy of youth.

  • Fear of what lays ahead.

  • Staying present.

  • My lack of BIPOC on my podcast guest list.

THIS needs deeper reflection and discussion.
